How Mind Affects the Effectiveness of Medication

In Truth of Life, there is a true story about a girl who became dizzy at a movie theater and told her date that she wanted to leave. He, however, wanted to remain and watch the movie. Luckily for him, in the darkness of the theater, he tore off a button from his shirt and said to her, "This medication is really effective for dizziness. Your dizziness will go away just by placing this tablet in your mouth." Indeed, her dizzy condition disappeared when she placed the shirt button in her mouth.

Dr. Ernest Holmes also describes the time when there was an epidemic of unknown cause in England. The British government distributed to each household medication that was said to be very effective. At the onset of this epidemic, the medication was indeed effective. However, when it was analyzed, the contents were found to be kerosene mixed with only a small quantity of medication that was not beneficial at all. When the public learned about this, the medication completely lost its therapeutic powers. This means that the power of conviction had effected the cure.

Illness Affected By Thoughts

Dr. Holmes also cites the following case: A woman was tormented by a pain in her stomach. She believed that she had this pain because a live lizard was living in her stomach. Her doctor tried to explain to her that it was impossible for a lizard to live in her stomach that was, after all, filled with digestive enzymes and carbonic acid gas. The patient refused to accept her doctor's explanation. Therefore, he had no choice but to agree to operate on her. He anesthetized her, and while she was under its effect, he placed a lizard into a glass water pitcher. He then lightly scored her skin so that it appeared that he had made an incision on her stomach. When the patient was awakened from the anesthesia, the doctor told her, "The surgery was a great success. As you said, there was a lizard in your stomach." The woman's painful condition disappeared.

Actual Cases That Attest to the Power of the Mind

There have been many cases such as the one above. There was a case where a patient thought that he had swallowed his denture and had a severe stomach pain; however, the moment the denture was discovered on a shelf, his stomach pain disappeared.

A patient believed that he was at life's end when told that an X-ray showed that half his lung was blackened. However, he instantly regained his healthy condition when he learned that the X-ray was that of another person taken during a mass X-ray screening and was mistakenly identified as his own. There was another case of a soldier who was lying in the battle-field, his face ashen with an apparent bullet wound in his chest. When the surgeon took the soldier's uniform off in preparation for surgery, a spent bullet that was thought to have penetrated him fell off. In an instant, the soldier regained his facial color and reverted completely to his normal healthy condition. Actual cases such as these attest to the power of the mind.

Fear is the Root of All Misfortunes

In the Holy Sutra, Song of the Angel it is written, "When fear is destroyed, All misfortune and sickness will vanish." All misfortune, calamities, and illnesses are, without exception, shadows of your mind being projected. Especially in the case of illnesses, the "emotion of fear" takes on an exceptionally important role. There are fears of illnesses themselves, but there are also other fears fear of failure in one's business, fear of impending doom, fear that a husband may be falling in love with another woman. All these fears create abnormal changes in the hormones, disrupting the physiological functions of the whole body, thereby causing illnesses. It may become necessary to treat the symptoms of these illnesses through medical means. However, in Seicho-No-Ie the basic therapeutic method is to guide the mind that is creating the abnormality into a completely peaceful condition.

The Basic Solution is to Call Forth God's Love and Wisdom

If you desire to heal your illness at its root and prevent its recurrence, you must discover the fundamental cause that is creating the physiological abnormality; that cause is comprised of the disharmonious thoughts in your mind. Furthermore, you must resolve the cause that has been generating the disharmonious thoughts a family problem, a business problem perhaps. Family disputes arise due to a discordant mind. When pure love truly wells forth in your mind, the problem will be resolved. Even if your business may be in dire straits, when the true wisdom from God is aroused through the inner True Image, no matter how complicated the problem may be, the path to its solution will open up. In situations such as these, you should turn your mind with wholehearted sincerity to God with these thoughts: "As God's love flows into me, all problems of my family will be solved. As God's wisdom flows into me, my business will surely turn for the better and lead me toward prosperity."

Here and Now is the Heavenly Treasure House of Infinite Supply

Whatever you do, your True Self must take the initiative. The physical body is not your true self. Jesus said: "I can of mine own self do nothing. . . I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me." (John 5:30). The "self' is the "heavenly Father who dwells in me" that must take the initiative. We have been struggling, hurrying, suffering to excess, trying to accomplish something. However, there is no need to accomplish anything on our own. What we need to do is to knock on the door of the home of our heavenly Father. There you will see the treasure house of infinite supply. God said: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." (Matt. 7:7). God's supply is infinite. This is the world of True Image. Seeing phenomena, do not be flustered, running about in confusion. Here and now is the heaven of infinite supply. Here and now is a treasure house of infinite supply.

We Select Our Own Fate

A rifle bullet whizzes by. We would be injured should the bullet hit us, but then it is only following the law of physics. The person who is hit does not necessarily function according to the same law but according to his own free will. We must say then that the responsibility of being struck by the bullet lies within us. Of course, when we are being targeted and shot at, the bullet is said to have its own trajectory. It is not through physical coincidence that the bullet flies, but that the other party consciously desires to attack; that means that we have in our consciousness the desire to attack someone. As the reflection of our thought, the bullet flies towards us. If you do not have any conscious desire to attack others, then no one will attack you. We are taught, "When you are so reconciled, the whole universe is your friend."
